Artist's Description
Comedian Lincoln Perry, aka Stepin Fetchit, became the first black actor to become a millionaire. In 1929, he earned between $750 and $1000 per week. He owned three cars, and as the story goes, after receiving 11 speeding tickets, Fox insisted that he hire a chauffeur. Here he is on the Fox movie lot in 1929. With an extravagant lifestyle, Perry went bankrupt in the 1940s, and by the 1960s, he was financially destitute and homeless. But he was full of Old Hollywood stories, many of them priceless. Perry was honored by the NAACP in the 1970s for his civil rights advocacy.
About Sad Hill - Bizarre Los Angeles Archive
My name is Craig Owens, a photographer/blogger for the popular Facebook Page "Bizarre Los Angeles" and the author of the book, "Haunted by History Vol. 1," separating the facts and legends of eight historic, haunted hotels in Southern California. I have always been in love with Old Hollywood. I love it for its glamour, its style, its mythology and its decadence, which always seems to be bubbling just below its surface. I'm a firm believer that its history should not be forgotten even if its architecture and carbon footprints are slowly being replaced.
