Description
Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, Classical Greek Dance became a popular visual in silent film. Sometimes it was used for whimsy...or fantasy...or as an amusement for the wealthy. But this popular dance isn't traced back to ancient Greece. It was developed and made popular by Ruby Ginner during the 1880s, making it a Victorian-era entertainment form that carried over into the Jazz Age and beyond. Although the dance was visually and thematically inspired by Greek culture and mythology, Ginner stressed that it was theatrical in form and that she created it to meld ancient ideas with modern times.
This particular scene appears in the Gloria Swanson film HER HUSBAND'S TRADEMARK (1922). Swanson appears as a spectator in the background.
