Artist's Description
Before Catalina Island adopted the name Two Harbors for its oldest seaport destination, the area was called the Isthmus because it separated Isthmus Cove from Catalina Harbor. Not only was the Isthmus the former site of a major Native American village, but it was later used by pirates and the Union army (briefly). Because of its remote beauty, the area became a major filming location for motion pictures that lasted from 1919 until the U.S. entered WWII. Here is how the Isthmus looked in the 1920s and 1930s when it was primarily a movie location and tourist stop for boaters. The building situated on a bluff overlooking the Isthmus is a house built in 1911. Today, it is a B&B called the Banning House Lodge. The development of the area and the true history of the Banning House Lodge appears in HAUNTED BY HISTORY, VOL. 1 written by CRAIG OWENS, which can be purchased on Bizarrela.com and Amazon.
About Sad Hill - Bizarre Los Angeles Archive
My name is Craig Owens, a photographer/blogger for the popular Facebook Page "Bizarre Los Angeles" and the author of the book, "Haunted by History Vol. 1," separating the facts and legends of eight historic, haunted hotels in Southern California. I have always been in love with Old Hollywood. I love it for its glamour, its style, its mythology and its decadence, which always seems to be bubbling just below its surface. I'm a firm believer that its history should not be forgotten even if its architecture and carbon footprints are slowly being replaced.
