Artist's Description

Introducing the Ruth Roland Sawmill Digital Image. It is a fun photo from the American silent movie serial The Timber Queen (1922). Makes those bad days bearable just looking at it.

The Timber Queen was produced by Pathé Exchange.

Ruth Roland (August 26, 1892 – September 22, 1937) was one of the best known and best loved silent movie stars of her day. Athletic and beautiful, she excelled as playing strong female protagonists in motion picture serials. Roland was also a shrewd business person.

A San Francisco native, Ruth debuted as a child performer on the vaudeville stage. When she was 12, she became the youngest student to attend Hollywood High School. She became the school’s first big movie star.

In 1911, she appeared in her first film, A Chance Shot, made for Kalem Studios in Los Angeles. She quickly became the studios most popular female star on the West Coast.

About Sad Hill - Bizarre Los Angeles Archive

Sad Hill - Bizarre Los Angeles Archive

My name is Craig Owens, a photographer/blogger for the popular Facebook Page "Bizarre Los Angeles" and the author of the book, "Haunted by History Vol. 1," separating the facts and legends of eight historic, haunted hotels in Southern California. I have always been in love with Old Hollywood. I love it for its glamour, its style, its mythology and its decadence, which always seems to be bubbling just below its surface. I'm a firm believer that its history should not be forgotten even if its architecture and carbon footprints are slowly being replaced.
