Description
Tragic Hungarian silent film beauty Lya De Putti lived a passionate yet tragic life. She lived like a cat with nine lives..with a self-destructive death wish that she could not shake. As a rising star in Europe, she suddenly made headlines in 1926 for attempting suicide by jumping out of a window over a failed relationship. After surviving (and denying) the suicide attempt...she fell down a flight of stairs and through another window years later. She lived through that ordeal, also denying that it was a suicide attempt. Then in 1930, she survived a plane crash only to be hospitalized the following year for choking on a chicken bone that developed into a throat infection.
While being treated for her infection in a sanitarium, she became a difficult patient, sneaking out of her room and hiding from the nurses and doctors. She was almost completely broke by this time. As her financial problems worsened, her health rapidly failed. After developing pleurisy on her right side, she succumbed to pneumonia in the sanitarium in November 1931. She was only 34.
