Splashy Broadway productions have long inspired Hollywood movies, who consistently revel in Broadway’s competitive auditions, personal and professional struggles, heartbreaks and over-the-top successes. Stamina, luck and temperance often superseded talent. But despite all the hardships and setbacks, “The show must go on!” Right?
“The Broadway Melody” boasted that it was Hollywood’s first “All Talking! All Singing! All Dancing!” movie! It became a box-office sensation as people stood in long lines, waiting to pay 35-cents for a ticket. Back then, folks wanted music, songs and dancing…and “The Broadway Melody of 1929” delivered.
As a result, MGM pulled in $4-million during the film’s original run and its new sound technology revolutionized cinema. The film’s success also produced numerous imitations, knock-offs and sequels!
“The Broadway Melody” tells the story of two sisters struggling for fame on Broadway, and how they achieved it with a roguish song and dance man who woos both of their hearts. Although the film’s camera work and plot is dated by today’s standard, the film still entertains thanks to its pre-code costumes and fun musical score.
About “The Broadway Melody” Chorus Girls:
Today’s films really don’t convey the kind of glamour that the films of the 1920s and 1930s captured. That’s why classic images like this remain popular with young and old. Images such as this convey sensuality, beauty and creativity…It also conveys eroticism and decadence. Makes one think of all the parties, secrets and scandals by those who show up at the studio every morning to make wholesome products for public consumption.
